Prof. Patrice Potvin, Ph.

„A growing number of studies conducted in neuroimaging and mental chronometry argue that when correct answers are given to scientific questions that possibly involve conceptual distractors, brain mechanisms usually associated with the cognitive function of inhibition are activated. Such results strongly suggest that initial conceptions coexist with scientific ones that are acquired later in life and persist even when expertise is well developed. Thus, they contradict some of the fundamental assumptions of the classical and transformative models of conceptual change. This presentation will reflect on the possible consequences for science teaching of fully recognizing the coexistence claim and will present findings related to the effect of certain pedagogical interventions on the development of educationally fertile inhibitive reactions. It will also argue for the use of a conceptual prevalence model of learning.
